Day 7–Addendum

I was going to talk about Katz’s Deli, but other things have intervened.  Back in 1971, I listened on my radio to Lloyd Pettit describe game 7 of the Chicago Blackhawks-Montreal Canadians Stanley Cup series. The Hawks went ahead in the game 2-0, but the Canadians came back to tie it up after two periods.  Then, at 2:34 of the third period Montreal  scored and the Hawks couldn’t come back.  But they had a young team and at some point expected to return to the finals and finally claim that elusive Cup that they hadn’t won since 1961.  It didn’t happen.

Until tonight. They are now 2010 Stanley Cup Champions.  I have a number of friends back in Chicago who are celebrating.  A great, great moment.  What is great about a team winning the Cup is each player is allowed one day to take it anywhere he wants to share it with family and friends.  Most bring it back to their hometown, usually some humble little place in Canada.

I guess I will talk about Katz’s.  What a great place! I had corned beef on rye, as corned beef was something we ate as a family on Easter.  I sat in the corner–you all remember what happened to Wild Bill Hickok (aces and eights)–and enjoyed the whole atmosphere.  The owner told me a bunch of movies were made here–most prominently “When Harry Met Sally”,which includes the memorable scene between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan in which the last line has a woman next to them saying, “I’ll have what she’s having”……

The pickles were awesome as well
